A branch and bound algorithm for scheduling trains in a railway network

چکیده
The paper studies a train scheduling problem faced by railway infrastructure managers during real-time traffic control. When train operations are perturbed, a new conflict-free timetable of feasible arrival and departure times needs to be recomputed, such that the deviation from the original one is minimized. The problem can be viewed as a huge job shop scheduling problem with no-store constraints. We make use of a careful estimation of time separation among trains, and model the scheduling problem with an alternative graph formulation. We develop a branch and bound algorithm which includes implication rules enabling to speed up the computation. An experimental study, based on a bottleneck area of the Dutch rail network, shows that a truncated version of the algorithm provides proven optimal or near optimal solutions within short time limits. 2006 Elsevier B.V. Dynamic Cargo Trains Scheduling for Tackling Network Constraints and Costs Emanating from Tardiness and Earliness
This paper aims to develop a multi-objective model for scheduling cargo trains faced by the costs of tardiness and earliness, time limitations, queue priority and limited station lines. Based upon the Islamic Republic of Iran Railway Corporation (IRIRC) regulations, passenger trains enjoy priority over other trains for departure. Therefore, the timetable of cargo trains must be determined based...
متن کاملA discrete-event optimization framework for mixed-speed train timetabling problem
Railway scheduling is a complex task of rail operators that involves the generation of a conflict-free train timetable. This paper presents a discrete-event simulation-based optimization approach for solving the train timetabling problem to minimize total weighted unplanned stop time in a hybrid single and double track railway networks. The designed simulation model is used as a platform for ge...
متن کاملLocomotive assignment problem with train precedence using genetic algorithm
This paper aims to study the locomotive assignment problem which is very important for railway companies, in view of high cost of operating locomotives. This problem is to determine the minimum cost assignment of homogeneous locomotives located in some central depots to a set of pre-scheduled trains in order to provide sufficient power to pull the trains from their origins to their destinations...
متن کاملPublic transport fleet scheduling for minimizing total transfer waiting time
Public transportation has been one of the most important research fields in the two last decades. The purpose of this paper is to create a schedule for public transport fleets such as buses and metro trains with the goal of minimizing the total transfer waiting time. We extend previous research works in the field of transit schedule with considering headways of each route as decision variables....
متن کاملA Comprehensive Approach for Railway Crew Scheduling Problem (Case Study: Iranian Railway Network)
The aim of this study is to propose a comprehensive approach for handling the crew scheduling problem in the railway systems. In this approach, the information of different railway trips are considered as input and the problem is divided to three separated phases. In phase I, we generate all feasible sequences of the trips, which are named as the pairings. A depth-first search algorithm is deve...
